1. Tell us a bit about yourself including what brought you to ANU.

I came to ANU at the start of 2017 from UNSW, where I had previously been an undergrad and later a PhD student. I had been very keen to work at ANU and live in Canberra since becoming an academic. But that hadnt really been long, since I came to academic life the long way around - I managed video stores and a liquor business for 10 years before I started law school at 28.

2. What do you enjoy most about working at the ANU College of Law?

I have never before worked with such excellent colleagues

3. What is your favourite spot on campus?

The area around Crawford School of Public Policy is really nice

4. How do you relax away from university?

I read, and do crosswords, and watch movies - nothing very energetic

5. How would you describe Canberra in three words?

Call that "traffic"?

6. What inspired you to pursue academia?

The realisation that I didnt want to be a partner in a national law firm (and the fact that the other lawyers thought I was weird for writing articles about administrative law)

7. What was your dream job as a child?

When I was small, my father went to work in a suit to "write letters and read them". I didnt know what he did but I wanted to do it, too.

8. Who’s your favourite fictional character?

A tie between Bertie Wooster and Jeeves

9. What’s a project or hobby you’re currently working on that motivates you?

We moved house before Christmas and I am having fun walking around our new town

10. What’s your favourite quote?

"You might very well think that but I couldn’t possibly comment" - Francis Urquhart from the UK House of Cards (1990)

11. What’s the secret to working from home successfully?

Resisting the urge to put on a load of washing or clean the kitchen

12. Who is someone you look up to?

Emertius Professor Mark Aronson, who is my co-author and was my PhD supervisor. He is terribly smart.

13. What was the last book you read?

Im about halfway through The Mirror and the Light by Hilary Mantel.

14. What’s an underrated movie?

Steven Spielbergs Munich (2005)

15. What’s your favourite dish?

My wife is a gifted cook so I eat lots of favourite dishes. I do like black pudding, which no-one else in the house does.

16. What’s your favourite place in Canberra to visit?

Mount Ainslie, although we seem to make more visits to the IKEA at Majura Park

17. What’s your favourite song or playlist to work to?

Something without lyrics, often classical or jazz, but currently Tangerine Dream

18. What’s a skill you’d like to learn?

I wish I could type, or play a musical instrument, or sing. Probably too old to learn any of them now.

19. What advice would you give to others feeling uneasy during this time?

Youre not alone. Even if we cant go for coffee right now, youre always welcome to call for a chat.
